No, I wasn't thinking of Canada when I did it…but I am glad you found it intriguing!
Honestly, it wasn't a piece I thought alot about as much as I needed to express and explore things that felt beyond words. My ideas and thoughts were swirling but when I work I pay more attention to feeling than ideas because I find the ideas sort themselves out though the expression. When it comes out through art I GET it on many levels and seemingly unrelated project problems get resolved.
I was inspired by my questions/insights about nationalism and trying to make sense of what was happens in its name. I had begun to consider that it didn't make sense but I accepted the situation for what it was…..a catalyst for change.
My thinking about this seemed complicated but what came out was strikingly simple.
The lightening for me represents that, as well as power…the leaf represents a meaningful symbol for me that reaches beyond nationality. My feelng is more that the leaf is a universal symbol of growth/transition in organic systems. This one has been compromised but remains front and center. The sky as the backdrop is ominous but also beautiful.
I did another piece around that same time called patriotism and I wasn't in either one seeking to “bad mouth” a specific nation as much as commenting on the general landscape.
I hope that helps! Thanks for paying attention and taking the time to comment :-)
You both have made my evening! I am grateful for your time and attention. I am so glad you enjoyed them : ) Thank you for taking the time share your appreciation with me!
I am working on selecting some pieces for a limited edition print series and some free promotional posters, so based on your feedback I will definitely consider this one for that project.
